"Welllllll, we saw a snake today!"
I love when she drawls out the "l" in "well"--usually something exciting is coming.
"Really? Did someone bring in it?"
"Well, a man just brought it over to show us. And you know what?"
"What? Did he let you touch it?"
"Yep, we all got to touch it. And then guess what? He asked if anyone wanted to hold it!"
Uh oh, this doesn't sound good...
"Whoa, really? Did anyone hold it?"
"I was the only one who wanted to hold it, everyone else was too scared," she says, not bragging, just curious as to why anyone in their right mind would be scared of a snake.
Starting to feel a little squirmish, I am thinking of my gentle little four year old girl in a class of almost all boys who most are a year older then her and wondering WHY she was the one who volunteered.
"So did you just hold it in your hand?" I say, thinking it must have been a tiny, baby, worm-like snake in her little hand, right? RIGHT?!
"Oh, no! He put it around my NECK!"
"What?!! Around your neck?" This comes out a little more terrified sounding than I would have liked. "How big was this snake?"
"Well, pretty long, it was a corn snake." she says way too nonchalantly, as I feel a shiver go up my spine.
My heart is starting to beat a little faster now, "Uhhhh, did the guy hold the head and the tail for you?"
"Nope! I just did it all by myself, his head just went that way and his tail went the other way, then he just slithered off me onto the floor."
Slithered off her neck? I, trying not to pass along to my offspring my own fear of slithery things, reply, "WOW! I'm so proud of you!"
And while I say it with chills going up my spine, I really mean it.

Yeah, Tes is WAY more brave than I was with this snake. Maybe that's why Caleb likes her so much :) It came to visit our class, and I moved WAY OVER to the other side of the room.
